SON PRIM

The winery

Our story

A family, some vines, and the conviction that wine is something special.

Roots

In the early nineties, Jaime Llabrés planted a small plot with a mix of grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot, to study their adaptation to Mallorca's climate and soil. We vinified the first results in small stainless steel tanks with a cooling system, set up under an enormous carob tree. The results were surprisingly good. The wine aged in barrels stored in the cool basement of a garage in Palma. From this adventure we obtained some barrels of excellent quality wine, and some vinegar that made a perfect salad dressing.

Generations

In the mid-nineties, the whole family joined in to plant new vines, including young Jaime J. Llabrés, who at five years old was already discovering the world of wine, growing alongside the vineyard and winery. He now looks after customer relationships and oversees the day-to-day running of the winery and vineyards. The old Son Prim cellar in the village of Sencelles had been unused for years. With its two stone vats and large oak casks, modernising it was a complicated task. So the decision was made to build a new winery with state-of-the-art equipment for wine production.

The land

One vineyard, every season

The same land the family has worked changes with the year, the red of winter, the vivid green of spring and, once in a while, snow from the Serra de Tramuntana settling over the vines. Tending a single vineyard means learning to read each of its seasons.

Building the cellar

A new winery, in the heart of the vineyard

In the middle of the countryside, right beside the new vineyards, we began construction in 2003 and finished just in time to bring in the first harvest in 2004. We had a comfortable space for fermentation and an underground space for ageing, the result was some magnificent varietal wines. A new winery and a new wine had been born.

Planting

Planting anew, vine by vine

Very low grape yields per vine are essential. This obliges us to increase the vineyard's surface area so that, at 3,500 bottles per hectare, we can maintain our current production. Our wines began to travel and be enjoyed across different countries.
